Mark 48 Heavyweight Torpedo

Scale 3D printed model of a Mark 48 torpedo.

Length: 17″ Width: 1 1/2″

The Mark 48 torpedo was developed in the late 1960s to counter the advances in Soviet submarine technology. It replaced the Mk-37, Mk-14, and Mk-16 torpedoes as the principal weapon of U.S. Navy submarines in 1972.

In 1977, the decision was made to accelerate the ADCAP program, which would bring significant modifications to the torpedo. The new version of the weapon, also known as Mk-48 Mod 5, was extensively tested and entered service in 1988.

Since then, the torpedo has been upgraded several times. As of 2012, the Mk-48 Mod 6 was in service. A Mod 7 version was test fired in 2008. The U.S. Navy had an inventory of 1,046 Mk-48 torpedoes in 2001. Lockheed’s production of the torpedo was approximately 50 per year in 2017.
